Many of the times Disasters come without a prior notice and lead to a large loss of human life, destruction of infrastructures, crops and industries and leaves chaos and powerlessness among the communities. It affects the entire socio-economic- psychological life of an individual, irrespective of socio-economic stratification.

Development of Orissa is inhibited by several natural disasters and calamities. Drought is prevalent in the western part; the eastern part is vulnerable to floods, cyclones and many forms of marine disasters. There is lack of an appropriate precaution to confront these problems. So the situations deteriorate and become challenges to many concerned departments and organisations. NYSASDRI is always encouraged people in disaster preparedness activities.

29th October 1999 was a black Friday in the history of Orissa. A cyclone at a speed of 350 kilometres per hour and high altitude sea waves with a height of 27 feet has devastated coastal districts. It was called as Super Cyclone. More than 30 thousand people and livestock passed away. About one-third of Orissa’s population (about 10 million) were affected in the super cyclone. NYSASDRI was active in worst affected districts i.e. Jagatsinghpur, Dhenkanal and Kendujhar for relief operation. It enhanced efforts to restore normalcy of affected villages/ communities. Safe drinking water, cooked food, medicines; then rice, dal, mustard oil, salt, utensils, essentials, polythene sheets, clothes, blankets were some of the common things supplied to affected population.
