DISASTER RESPONSE
Many of the times Disasters come without a prior notice and lead to a large loss of human life, destruction of infrastructures, crops and industries and leaves chaos and powerlessness among the communities. It affects the entire socio-economic- psychological life of an individual, irrespective of socio-economic stratification.

29th October 1999 was a black Friday in the history of Orissa. A cyclone at a speed of 350 kilometres per hour and high altitude sea waves with a height of 27 feet has devastated coastal districts. It was called as Super Cyclone. More than 30 thousand people and livestock passed away. About one-third of Orissa’s population (about 10 million) were affected in the super cyclone. NYSASDRI was active in worst affected districts i.e. Jagatsinghpur, Dhenkanal and Kendujhar for relief operation. It enhanced efforts to restore normalcy of affected villages/ communities. Safe drinking water, cooked food, medicines; then rice, dal, mustard oil, salt, utensils, essentials, polythene sheets, clothes, blankets were some of the common things supplied to affected population. |
