Respect
for the Senior Citizens
Under Adopt A Granny programme- a worldwide
initiative by The HelpAge International,
UK to augment and advocate for care OldAge
care – NYSASDRI is putting its effort
in this direction, since 1997. As a committed
NGO in Orissa, India, the organisation
is assisting 119 senior citizens in remote
village of Santhasara, Dhenkanal and Saliasahi-
the biggest slum in Bhubaneswar. The locus
of the programme is to adopt abandoned
and neglected elderly persons and providing
psychosocial care as well as livelihood
assistance to meet their basic needs.
The AAG beneficiaries are helpless and
ignored by their family members. Most
of the AAG beneficiaries have neither
relatives nor any other close neighbour
and due to old age, they are unable to
earn money and sustain their life. |

Under
this programme, every month the beneficiaries are
getting benefits like dry rations, sundry items, pocket
money and essential commodities like clothes, and
utensils. As the older people are so old and they
are not able to walk to the common ground of project
site, the staffs meet them directly with the client.
The project staff is carrying out the health check
up and counseling programmes for the elders as well
as family members and community. The senior citizen-
who is capable of doing some work- is also encouraged
to earn and integrate with the family and community.
The organisation also takes care of Mobilizing support
and services from govt. like pension, subsidiary loan,
travel concession etc. |
Considering
the vulnerability of the community NYSASDRI is working
in Santhasara Village, Gondia block of Dhenkanal district
and the Saliasahi slum of Bhubaneswar. In the former
area, the beneficiaries belong to Schedule Caste/Schedule
Tribe and poor communities without any source of income
to support their livelihood. On the other hand, the
beneficiaries are wageworker with social and financial
insecurity. |
