Rehabilitating cyclone-hit villages in Jagatsingpur

After completing our relief and short-term recovery programme for the 1999 super-cyclone victims, NYSASDRI initiated a long-term rehabilitation and income generation programme in Ragunathpur block, Jagatsingpur district. An example of one of the many places we worked is Kakudia, a village of 50 households, and a hub of bamboo craftsmen. After NYSASDRI assisted villagers to rebuild their houses, they asked for help to revive their occupation of bamboo basket making, destroyed by the disaster.

With our support, the women formed savings and credit groups who began activities amongst themselves, and opened a bank account. The capital enabled the revival of their livelihoods that had been devastated by the super-cyclone. As well, this created a platform for the women to discuss issues and take part in the village development for the first time.
